Howard C. Wheeler, 90, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2013 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio.

He was born August 2, 1922 in Auglaize County, Ohio to the late Frank R. and Hazel Mae (Reed) Wheeler and came to this area in 1950. Howard was a member of the Norwalk First United Methodist Church where he sang in the Chancel Choir for 50 years, taught Sunday school, was a delegate to the Annual Conferences at Lakeside, and hosted Bible studies in his home. He earned both a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in Administration from Bowling Green State University where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Mr. Wheeler taught English, World Geography, and Reading Intervention to seventh and eighth graders in the Norwalk City School District for 30 years. He was also a toll collector for the Ohio Turnpike for 20 years.

Howard was a member of the Norwalk Lions Club, the Shakespeare Club, the Shoestring Players, Huron County Retired Teachers Association, the Ohio Education Association, the National Education Association, the Norwalk Teachers Association, and was member of Mt. Vernon Lodge # 64 Free and Accepted Masons (Third Degree). He taught piano lessons in his home, delivered Meals on Wheels for Fisher Titus Medical Center, and donated over 20 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. Howard enjoyed fishing, traveling, music, caning chairs, and working with stained glass. He also enjoyed gardening, canning and freezing vegetables, growing and arranging flowers, refinishing furniture, collecting antiques, completing daily crossword puzzles and jumbles, feeding and watching birds, boating, making and eating ice cream, and he especially enjoyed family gatherings. Howard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, teacher, and a thoughtful neighbor.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marguerite (Peggy) (Spitzer) Wheeler of Norwalk, Ohio, by his children, Kathryn Margaret and David W. Clark of Columbus, Ohio, Elizabeth Diane "Betsy" and Brian F. Kniffin of Norwalk, Ohio, Victoria Anne Wheeler of Norwalk, Ohio, Reed Hobart and Christine (Horning) Wheeler of Cleveland, Ohio, and by his grandchildren, Sarah (Kniffin) and Jeffrey Lee of Nashville, Tennessee, Abigail Clark of New Albany, Ohio, Hannah Clark of Columbus, Ohio, and Laura (Kniffin) and Justin Carroll of Huron, Ohio. Howard is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Barbara Wheeler of Wapakoneta, Ohio and Dorothy Wheeler of Alexandria, Virginia, and by his brother and sister-in-law, Nicholas A. and Barbara Spitzer of Pickerington, Ohio.

Howard was preceded in death by his twin brother, Harold F. Wheeler and by his older brother, Roger E. Wheeler. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Norwalk First United Methodist Church, 60 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Gary Streiff will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
