"You can shed tears that he is gone or you can smile because he lived & touched so many lives." Dr. Eugene D. Schmiedl passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2013, leaving his loving wife, Toni, after 61 years of marriage. He was born March 28, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Sophie and Julius Schmiedl.
He graduated from Avon Lake High School, Kent State University, received his Master's Degree at Bowling Green State University, and his Doctorate at Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Schmiedl taught at BGSU, was a director of Pupil Personnel at Lorain Public Schools and Rocky River Public Schools, from there he went to Lorain Community College as a Vice President, where he worked with the architect to build the campus. From there he went to the Cleveland Institute of Music, serving as Vice President, until he retired. He also was President of Ohio School Psychologists and on the University Circle Board.
Upon retirement, Gene worked with Volunteer Centers in Sandusky, and received outstanding awards from CASA, and raised funds for the Maritime Museum in Sandusky.
He was an avid sailor, built boat models, loved dancing, and entertained many with his piano playing.
He is survived by his wife, Antoinette "Toni" (Mittiga) Schmiedl, three sons, Kurt (Beryl) of Reading, MA., Dr. Mark (Wendy) of Sandusky, OH., and Eric, of Bay Village, OH.; seven grandchildren, Elliot (Key Anna) of MA., Kira of Vt., Melissa of MA., Matthew and Samantha of Sandusky, OH., and Dylan and Cate, Fairview Park, OH. - all Schmiedl's. They will dearly miss him.
There will be no visitation. Private Family Services will be conducted at a later date at the Lakewood Park Cemetery, in Rocky River, OH. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, Sandusky are handling the arrangements.
