Donald A. Ohlemacher

Donald A. Ohlemacher, 88, of Sandusky, passed away surrounded by his family early Saturday evening, Jan. 25, 2014, after a brief illness.

He was born October 25, 1925, in Sandusky, Ohio to the late Norman K. and Elsie K. (Roberts) Ohlemacher.

A 1944 graduate of Sandusky High School, he served in the Army during WWII with the 103rd Cactus Division having fought in France & Germany. His unit was the first in the 7th Army to cross the German border. He earned two bronze battle stars. He attended the National Radio School and worked as an electronics technician at the Philco plant for 12 years. Don worked for NASA at the research reactor at the Plum Brook Station as an electronic unit supervisor and at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, OH before retiring after 26 years of service.

He was a ham radio operator and a member of the Sandusky Radio Experimental League serving many years as secretary-treasurer. He was a member of the ARES emergency team and a spotter for the National Weather Service in Cleveland, OH.

Don was also an avid artist entering and selling his paintings at numerous art shows. He was a member of the Firelands Area Art League. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 2529 and the Amvets Post 17. He was also a member of the Sandusky Maritime Museum. Don was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church of Sandusky, OH. He loved painting, hunting, fishing, boating, traveling, camping, golfing, and dancing.

He is survived by his son, James A. (Carolyn) Ohlemacher of Sandusky; his daughter, Jean M. Ohlemacher of Sandusky; four grandchildren, James, Christopher, Jennifer, Susan; two great grandsons, Henry and George; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn D. (Gowitzka) Ohlemacher, to whom he was married for 54 years; and his brothers, Fr. Richard, Marvin, Robert and Paul Ohlemacher.

Friends may call on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 5-8 PM in the Groff Funeral Home and Crematory 1607 E. Perkins Ave. Sandusky, Ohio. Prayers will be recited on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 9:30 AM in the Funeral Home followed by a 10 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Catholic Church 429 Central Ave. Sandusky, Ohio. The Rev. Eric Mueller will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
