Mrs. Arlene Yvonne DeShazor Craig

Mrs. Arlene Yvonne DeShazor Craig , 90, was called home on January 29, 2014. At the time of her passing she lived in Sarasota, Florida where she moved in 2002 with her son Stephen who cared for her until her death.

She was born in Troy, Alabama on August 14, 1923 to James Samuel DeShazor and Era Mae Smith DeShazor.

Arlene was married to the late Ernest D. Craig for 38 years until his death in 1978. She lived a full life that included raising nine children. She enjoyed cooking, reading, gardening, and singing. She was a dedicated and loving wife and mother who cherished spending time with her children, extended family, and friends.

She worked for the Philco Electric Plant until it closed and for the Erie County Election Board. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She had an unwavering faith in God and was involved in the church. Arlene helped form the Wee-Too Club in Soldiers Home, Ohio. She was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital and the Democratic Party of Erie County.

Arlene is survived by two daughters, Marva L. Johnson and Janet A. (Moses) Croom, both of Sandusky; seven sons Ernest R. (Hilda) Craig, Akron, OH, Robert W. Craig of Orlando, Fl., Jeffrey E. (Thelma) Craig of Aurora, CO., Stephen T. Craig of Sarasota, Fl., Michael A. (Karen) Craig of Apex, NC , Bryan A (Belon) Craig of Coupeville, WA, and Dr. Byron B Craig (Bloomington, IN). She is also survived by loving cousins, Mary Lundy (Sandusky), Pam (Willie) Pentorn of Louisville, Kentucky, and Jimmy L. (Marlene) Baker of Woodbridge, VA.; sixteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; a host of nephews and nieces, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest D. Craig, a daughter in infancy and a great-grandson Jared Croom; father James Samuel Deshazor and mother Era Mae Humphrey; her stepfather Thomas Humphrey and stepmother Plessie DeShazor; one brother Asia DeShazor; and her dear friend Claudie Koonce.

Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, from 11:00am until time of funeral services at 1:00pm in Harvest House Missionary Baptist Church, (First Presbyterian Church), 265 Jackson St., Sandusky. Minister Zachary Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky is handling arrangements.
