Rev. John Marshall Stovall

Rev. John Marshall Stovall, 87, Sandusky, departed this life on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at his residence.

He was born on September 17, 1923 in Sandusky, OH, to Winifred and Theodoshia (Singleton) Stovall. He was a 1942 graduate of Sandusky High School, and attended the New York School of Dental Technology and Bowling Green State University Firelands Campus. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for thirty-two years, retiring in 1984, and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, serving in WWII. In 1959, "Rev" acknowledged and accepted his calling by God into the ministry of preaching God's word. He served in many capacities at Ebenezer Baptist Church including: superintendent of Sunday School, business manager for the Male Chorus, Youth Director, and associate minister, working for over forty years side-by-side with Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Curtis A. Brown, as assistant to the pastor at the church. He served the community on many civic boards and committees; he was a founding member and president of the Sandusky Citizens Coalition, served on the Erie Co. Human Services Advisory Board, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, awarded the Ebenezer Baptist Church Youth Award and the "Reclaiming Our Youth" Award, Sandusky Branch of the NAACP annual "Trailblazer Award", Salvation Army Advisory Award and the National Council of Negro Women Community Impact Award, elected to the Erie Co. Chamber of Commerce "Gallery of Achievers", and played a vital role in the Sandusky Annual Oldtimers Reunion.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Katie (Baxter) Stovall; daughters, Gwendolyn Stovall and Luvada (Robert) Wilson, both of Sandusky; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Waymond Stovall, Warren, OH; and Franklin "Pete" Stovall, Flint, MI; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerry Stovall and Paul "Connly" Stovall; sisters, Marilyn (in infancy), Mabel Abrams, Luvada Stovall, and Gloria Jean "Jeannie" Graves.

Friends may call on Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 7-9 PM in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 AM in the church. Pastor Clayton E. Howard will officiate and Rev. Leon L. Troy will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sandusky City Coalition, 913 W.
