Leola M. Schafer, 91, of Huron, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2014 in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.

She was born on April 5, 1923 in Sandusky and was a 1940 graduate of Monroeville High School.

Leola was a church organist, executive secretary, bookkeeper, and homemaker. She worked as an executive secretary for the Huron County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and as office manager for Waste Materials Co., Henry Kemper, Norwalk.

Leola and her husband, Wayne, were avid western style square dancers, often holding dances in their home and barns at the farm. They also enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, with their family and friends.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sandusky, where she was very active in the Women of the Church. Leola was Past President of the Ohio District of the ALCW, and attended many national and state conventions for the group. She traveled extensively for the Women of the Church both locally and nationally. Also a member of Zonta International, Sandusky Club, where she was a member of the board, Past President, and Parliamentarian. She received the Women of Excellence in 2009.

She is survived by her son, Jerry (Cathy) Schafer, of Pickerington, OH; and grandson, Evan Schafer, of Cincinnati, OH.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Wayne C. Schafer, in 2010; and her parents, Emery and Leonora (Behrens) Niemann.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 5:30 P.M. in Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Rev. John Mawhirter will officiate. Private burial will be in Scott Cemetery, Huron.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Leola's name may be made to Luther Home of Mercy, 5810 N. Main St., Williston, OH 43468, or to Zion Lutheran Church Radio Fund. The family would like to give a special thank you to Drs. James and Susan Gallagher, Dr. Patrick McGwinn, and the nursing staff of Firelands Regional Medical Center - 3 Towers, for their loving care provided to Leola.
