Clair D. McCreery, age 86, of Castalia, died Monday night at Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, following a brief illness.

He was born October 20, 1924, in Sandusky, and graduated from Margaretta High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy, and worked as a patrolman for several years before becoming police chief of Castalia, retiring in 1988. Clair also was the former mayor of Castalia, and was on the village council, zoning board of appeals, and Erie regional planning. His love for his job as police chief and serving his community, Castalia named a street in honor of him, McCreery Court. Clair was very devoted to his family, and took great care of his wife Ivadell, until her passing in 1999.

He is survived by his daughter Sharon (Todd) Miller, Castalia; step son Gary (Dianne) Bath, Castalia; step daughter in-law Nancy Bath; several grand children, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Clair was preceded in death by his wife Ivadell (Yeckley) McCreery; parents Jessie and Nellie (Stout) McCreery; step son Larry Bath; father and mother in-law Alvin and Mabel ( Scherz) Wobser; four sisters Marquerite Miller, Ruth Minier, Lois Blystone, and Joyce Gantz; four brothers Cleo, Ronald, Earl, and Clayton McCreery; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia. The body will lie in state from 10:00 AM until time of services at 11:00 AM Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, 203 S. Washington St., Castalia. Rev. Kathleen Suggitt will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
