Sharon Alice (Fritz) Felter

Sharon Alice (Fritz) Felter, 61, of Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly in her home on Thursday, July 10, 2014.

She was born on December 19, 1952 in Oceanside, California to Darl and Virginia (Lucas) Fritz, and grew up in Shelby, Ohio.

Sharon's love for helping and caring for others was evident from a young age. After graduating from Shelby High School in 1971, she went on to pursue a career in nursing, graduating from The Ohio State University School of Nursing in 1976.

Sharon put herself through college, and was the first member of her family to graduate from college. After graduating and becoming a registered nurse, she worked in the neurotrauma intensive care unit and was a neurosurgical nurse clinician at The Ohio State University Hospital. She later volunteered as a nurse for Sandusky City Schools, and worked as a nurse at Sandusky Orthopedics.

Sharon was an excellent pianist and began playing in Shelby as a little girl. She particularly enjoyed playing Beethoven, David Lanz, and music from the "Phantom of the Opera." She was always listening to music, and particularly loved James Taylor, who was always her favorite musician.

She read voraciously, and loved American history and learning about the American presidents. She particularly enjoyed Thomas Jefferson, traveling to Monticello on several occasions. Sharon also loved traveling. Her favorite destinations were Boston, Chicago, the national parks, and Las Vegas to see her family.

After first moving to Sandusky in the mid-1980's, she began playing tennis regularly, frequently playing with her dear friend, Sue Moxley, of Vickery, Ohio. She also deeply loved animals, and was a caring mom to many dogs, cats, and other animals through the years.

Sharon was an avid gardener, and had a great love and deep knowledge of flowers. She took great pride in decorating her home in Sandusky, particularly around Christmas. She was known by many in the area for the beautiful poinsettias that she would prominently display on her grand piano during the holiday season.

She also took great pride in and dedicated much of her life to philanthropic endeavors, donating generously to various charities throughout her life, and serving on the board of trustees at the Sandusky State Theatre and Kinship, Inc. in Sandusky. She also volunteered as a school nurse for Sandusky City Schools when her boys were students there, and she worked for many years as a den-mother for Troop 8, at Zion Lutheran Church, when her boys were in the Cub Scouts. She also helped out with athletic events and booster clubs when her sons were playing sports growing up. Her home was always open to her sons' teammates and other friends for a place to hang out to have some Cameo pizza or her famous sausage rolls and sodas after ballgames.

Most important to Sharon, however, was always her friends and family - particularly her boys. She was a devoted and caring mother, wife, sister, and daughter. She adored and loved her family and friends, and they adored and loved her back. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all for her sense of humor, caring, and generosity.

Sharon is survived by her father, Darl Fritz, of Shelby, Ohio; sisters, Mary Etta Ventre, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Laura Fritz, of Shelby, Ohio; sons, John Michael Fritz Felter, of Sandusky, Thomas Patrick Fritz (Natalie) Felter, and Nicholas William Fritz Felter, both of Dublin, Ohio; her husband of 32 years, Dr. Michael Felter, of Sandusky, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews; her beloved Labradoodle, Maggie May; and many close friends like Sue Moxley and Mary Ellen Hart, whom she adored and regarded as family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Fritz, in 2011; and her beloved Yellow Lab, Molly, in 2007.

Friends may call from 4-8 P.M. on Tuesday, July 15, at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 16, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 31 N. Gamble St., Shelby. Burial will follow in Shelby-Oakland Cemetery.
