Berkeley R. Vassar

Berkeley R. Vassar, age 85, of Castalia, died Wednesday morning, August 27, 2014, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.

He was born December 2, 1928, in Springfield, MA, and was a 1946 graduate of Lima High School.

He began his automotive career at New Departure Hyatt, and after 12 years, he joined Ford Motor Co. as a supervisor, retiring in 1988, after 40 years of employment. He was a 6 year veteran of the U. S. Army, serving as a tank commander in the Korean War. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sandusky, and was an avid Margaretta sports fan.

Berk is survived by his daughter Ann (Tal) Strean of Castalia; 3 sons David (Carla) Vassar of Avon, OH, James Vassar of Tiffin, OH, and Mark (Robyn) Vassar of Atlanta, GA; 10 grandchildren Erika, Adam, Ashly, Erin, Michael, Emilie, Lauren, Harrison, and twins Tenley and Preston; one sister Janis (Lee Havner) Harris; one brother Dean (Ann) Vassar both of Maryland; and 3 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn in 2007, to whom he was married for 56 years; his parents Paul and Edythe Vassar; and one brother Buddy.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-9 pm Friday, August 29, 2014, in the Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, and from 9:30 am Saturday, August 30, 2014, until time of services at 10:30 am in Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Bardshar Road, Sandusky. The Rev. Philip Gardner will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery, with the American Legion conducting military services.
