Jane (Homan) Schaffer

Jane (Homan) Schaffer, 93, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away early Monday morning, September 8, 2014 in Norwalk Memorial Home.

She was born January 1, 1921 in Norwalk, Ohio to the late Leslie Q. and Frances A. (Saladin) Homan, a founding Huron County family, who were the owners of the former Homan Appliance Store, and was a lifelong area resident.

Jane was a 1938 graduate of Norwalk High School, and in 1943 joined the Cadet Nurse Corps, and graduated from St. Vincent Hospital, School of Nursing, (now Mercy Hospital) in 1946. As a Registered Nurse, she worked at the old Memorial Hospital until they moved to Fisher Titus in 1957. She worked at Fisher Titus for 37 years retiring in 1984. Jane married Wilbert Lawrence "Bill" Schaffer on February 12, 1947.

She was a member, Eucharistic Minister, volunteer, and usher at 4:30 mass, of St. Paul Catholic Church, and was a member of the Women of St. Paul, and the Daughters of Isabella. Jane was past president of Ken Bur Bell Post #41 American Legion Auxiliary, past president of Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, past Worthy Matron of Queen Esther Chapter #15 Order of Eastern Star from 1993 to 2000. She was also a former officer of Norwalk Eagles Post #711, past president of Firelands Senior Center, former member of Huron County Genealogical Society, former member of Advisory Council of District 5 Ohio Department of Aging representing the City of Norwalk Mayor's Office.

Jane was also a Senior Enrichment Services Ambassador, volunteer for the American Red Cross, was a member of the 55 Plus Club, the W.O.W. organization, Veggie U Culinary Arts Institute, was the former 4H Club camp nurse at Camp Conger for 16 years, was a volunteer for Stein Hospice Service for many years, and was Senior of the year of the Huron County Senior Enrichment Service in 2009. Jane touched many lives as a nurse, volunteer, mother, and grandmother, and will be sadly missed by her family. She enjoyed playing cards, and going to her grandchildren's, and great grandchildren's sporting events.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (David) Doerner of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Peggy (Margaret) (Kenneth) Nickoli of Norwalk, Ohio, by her son in law, Gary Gilbert of Norwalk, Ohio, by 9 grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris), Scott, Jason, Bradley (Jaime), Jay, Curtis, Britt, Amanda, and Wade (Ivy), 15 great grandchildren, by her sister, Betty McConkey of Bellevue, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Schaffer in 1977, by her daughter, Deborah Gilbert in 2014, and by her sister, Margaret Hilson, in 2007.

Friends may call on Thursday, September 11, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Msgr. Kenneth Morman will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery.
