Harold W. Holzhauser

Harold W. Holzhauser, 98, of Sandusky , went home to be with his Lord Thursday morning, March 10, 2011 at the Providence Care Center, Sandusky.

He was born on October 3, 1912 in Sandusky, Ohio, the son of the late John and Amanda Holzhauser. He graduated from Sandusky High School and the Sandusky Business College. He spent his entire life in the Sandusky / Erie County area, where he had many friends and co-workers. After a short time at Plum Brook Ordinance, a 1940s munitions plant, he went on to work at Barr Rubber and Apex, where he was employed for nine years. Then, at the urging of a close friend, he applied for and secured the job of Assistant Treasurer for the city of Sandusky, where he stayed over ten years. His last job was working as Finance Director for the city of Huron. Once again, he enjoyed his job and new friends so much that he worked until age 70. He retired in 1982 because he wanted to spend more time with his family and friends and be more active in the community. His hobbies included gardening, music (especially Lawrence Welk), dancing, and table tennis (he and his wife, Ruth, were couples table tennis champions). Harold was very active in the community for almost his entire life. He was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed and where he served on church council and as usher and offering recorder. He was also a 65-year member of Science Lodge # 50, F.& A.M., and a long-time member of Singara Grotto, where he served as secretary and auditor of the books. Toward the middle of his life, he became a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Sandusky Bay. He was extremely active and served as the club's president, secretary, and treasurer. As a club officer, Harold was instrumental in helping to obtain financing for the construction of Viewpoint and Harborview Senior Citizen Apartment buildings, now run by NCR, National Church Residential. He served as President and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees for the Sandusky Senior Center, the original managing corporation of the two buildings. Also, as Finance Director of Huron, he became involved in RITA and served as Vice Chairman of RITA Board of Trustees. Finally, in his later years, he joined the Sandusky Garden Club, wher he served as President, the Senior Men's Club and the Erie County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Gloria Holzhauser of Sandusky, his children; Carol Grubb of Sandusky, Karen Steigerwald of Toronto, Ohio and Robert Holzhauser and wife, Mary Jane of Tiffin, Ohio, grandchildren; Andy Holzhauser of Cincinnati, Ohio, Cory Holzhauser of Perrysburg, Cyndy Plasman and husband Robert of Coolidge, Arizona, Pete Steigerwald of Mingo Junction, Ohio, Harvey Steigerwald Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia, Pat Kovach of Orwell, Ohio, great-grandchildren; Coty and Ciara Plasman of Coolidge, Arizona, plus two additional great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and special friends of the family; Joyce, Jill, Candy, Kasey, Doris and Jason. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Mielke)Holzhauser, his brother, John (Bud) Holzhauser, his parents, John and Amanda (Dahnke) Holzhauser, his niece, Sue Dolan, and his son-in-law, Harvey Steigerwald.
