Michael J. "Mike" Harman, Sr.

Michael J. "Mike" Harman, Sr., 91, of Bellevue, Ohio departed this world on Friday, March 11, 2011, following a short illness.

Mike was born in Cambridge, Ohio on November 20, 1919 to Michael and Ana Latchic Harman. He had one brother, Paul, of Riverton, N.J., and one sister, Vera, who died in infancy. After graduating from Cambridge High School, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of World War II from 1941 to 1946. He served in Dutch Harbor, Alaska during the Aleutian Islands Campaign, where he rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Following the war, Mike returned home and married Wilma Duch, on July 5, 1947 at Holy Trinity Church in Byesville, Ohio. Mike went on to graduate magna cum laude from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and also earned an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1952. He retired from Clevite/Gould (now Tenneco Corp.) as Director of Purchasing for the Elastomers Division in Milan, Ohio in 1989 after over 35 years with the corporation.

He was dedicated to community service, working with the Eagles, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, Moose, Serra Club, Toastmasters, and most recently the Immaculate Conception Church St. Vincent de Paul Society in Bellevue, where he served for a number of years as Treasurer.

Mike Harman is survived by his eight children, Michael JP Harman of Cambridge OH; Stephen and Patricia Harman, Kankakee, IL; Mary Anne Comotto and Ronald Buchan, Avon, OH; Cynthia and James Brightwell, Roswell, GA; Nancy Alyea, Cordova, TN; Tina and Jim Graham, Bellevue, OH; Thomas and Shelley Harman, Lewisville, TX; Judith and Michael Brown, Grayslake, IL; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. His family will remember him for his legendary sarcastic wit, dedication to his faith, and love and concern for them.

Mr. Harman is preceded in death by his spouse Wilma (d. 1994), his parents, siblings, and in-laws.

Visitation will take place at Foos & Foos Funeral Home, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue, OH 44811 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, March 17, 2001. The Rosary will be said at 8:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 231 E. Center St., Bellevue, OH 44811 on Friday, March 18 at 11:00 am. Burial rites will be accorded at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cambridge, OH at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 19.
