James (Jim) Gus Denos

James (Jim) Gus Denos, 64, died peacefully Friday morning at the Veteran's Home in Sandusky where he had been a resident for the past several years.

Jim was born on April 21, 1950 to Clara and Gus Denos.

Jim grew up in Catawba Cliffs and attended Catawba Island Elementary School. He graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1968. After graduating, Jim served 4 years in the U.S. Navy, and then enrolled at BGSU, earning his degree in History and Social Studies. Jim also earned his MA in Education, while teaching at the Norwalk Middle School in Norwalk, Ohio for 27 years. Jim was part of the city of Norwalk's Zoning Commission for over twenty years. He also belonged to the Norwalk Elks Lodge # 730.

Although Jim enjoyed sports of any kind, his first love was golf, and he coached the Norwalk Truckers varsity golf team for over 20 successful seasons. He guided the Truckers to a 7th place Division II state finish, and after his 20 years as head coach, he stayed on as a volunteer assistant coach for 10 more years. Jim was a mentor and example of goodness to many young people throughout the years, as reflected by the many Facebook posts received recently from former students who remember Jim as their favorite teacher. Jim played in the Eagle Creek Club Championship, Flight A. He was recently honored at Eagle Creek Golf Course as an Inductee to the Heritage Hall of Fame for his many contributions to the Junior Golf Programs and the Norwalk Trucker's Golf Team. Jim loved being around the kids and helping them learn the game of golf and ultimately the game of life.

Not only did Jim embody the integrity of golf, Jim lived his life full of integrity and honesty. Jim was a man of few words, but his subtle sense of humor brought laughter to those who knew him. Jim quietly lived his life helping others.

Jim is survived by his mother Clara (Upton), sister Gloria Denos, and brother Peter Denos, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Ohio Veteran's Home and those individuals from Stein Hospice for their kindness and attention to Jim and his needs.

There will be a memorial service at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk, Ohio on Saturday, November 15, at 12:00 There will be no visitation.

The family asks that contributions be made to the Eagle Creek Junior Golf Program.
