Betty J. Reardon

Betty J. Reardon, 94, of Sandusky, died Monday morning, December 22, 2014 in The Meadows at Osborn Park following a lengthy illness.

She was born on May 29, 1920, the youngest child of Warren & Marion (Klemm) Oliver.

She attended Sandusky Public Schools and graduated in 1938. She was a proud member of the Sandusky High School Band, playing the French horn. Betty was the secretary/treasurer of the Class of 1938 Reunion Committee and helped plan all their "every five year" reunions thru 2008. She also planned their monthly class luncheons thru 2011.

In her younger life, she was the office assistant of Dr. Anthony Grierson in the Feick Building. Later in life, she worked for the Sandusky Public Schools, serving as the secretary of Mills Elementary School from 1968-1980. This was a job that she loved and often said that she would have done it for free! She retired early to tend to her ailing husband, Rex.

Betty was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher in her younger days. She later served two terms on the Board of Deacons and one term on the Board of Ruling Elders. She was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Women's Association, receiving an Honorary Life Membership in 1992. She served for several years as the Sunshine secretary & table decorator for the PW's annual Lenten Luncheons. She served for 15 years as a member of the Firelands Hospital Women's Auxiliary, mainly as the hostess for the Senior Saver Program, and occasionally working in the gift shop.

Betty served as a Cub Scout Den mother for PACK 8, Den 6 in the late 1950's and was the secretary of the Sandusky Band Parents Organization in the late 1960's. She served as the secretary/treasurer of the Friendly "U" Organization on Karl-Ann & Stahlwood Drives for several years. Betty was an avid music lover and attended many concerts over the years, especially those that included her son, nephew or grandchildren as performers or conductors.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Michelle) Reardon of Sandusky; grandchildren, Adam (Amanda) Reardon of Sandusky and Laura (Jason) Zumbaugh of Edgerton, Ohio; great grandchildren, Sean and Sara Reardon and Seth Zumbaugh. She is also survived by her sister and best friend Marion (Jib) Werner; nephew, William (Barbara) Werner and their family and one brother in law, Howard Nemitz all of Sandusky.

Friends may call Friday, December 26, 2014 from 9:30 AM until time of funeral service at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 265 Jackson Street, Sandusky. The Rev. Edgar Shelley will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
