Gene Geib, 84, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 16, 2015 following several years of failing health.

He was born on August 29, 1930 in Circleville, Ohio to Glen and Nellie (Soules) Geib.

Along with his family, he moved to Fremont in 1944. He was a 1949 graduate of Fremont Ross High School and attended The Ohio State University for two years, where he earned a "letter" as a member of the Buckeye football team. Following an honorable discharge from the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, Gene attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY prior to marrying Donna Soyster, of St. Joseph, Mich., in 1953. The couple resided in Fremont for many years following their marriage.

Gene was a construction professional for more than 50 years, having worked as a project manager and estimator for Mosser Construction and with several other firms throughout the Midwest. Always seeking unique and challenging opportunities, Gene spent a number of years working for contractors in Orlando, Honolulu, and St. Thomas, USVI. One of Gene's most enjoyable business relationships was with Cedar Point, where he partnered to help create and construct many of the park's most popular features. After his retirement, Gene provided construction management services to Cedar Fair (parent company of Cedar Point) at their, then newly acquired, amusement park in Muskegon, Mich.

During his life, Gene was a member of the BPOE, Lions Club, and Moose Lodge. For more than two years, Gene served as president of the Fremont Ross Boosters Association and was involved with a number of other civic and philanthropic organizations in the Fremont area.

Gene's life-long enthusiasm and support for Ohio State football was always a source of pride for him and friendly banter among his many friends. Last month's national championship win over Oregon is now even more significant as it is, in some way, a tribute to Gene's never ending love and appreciation of all things "Buckeye."

Gene enjoyed anything related to sports and art, and along with his wife, amassed a large collection of glass paperweights and seashells. Gene and Donna were well known antique hunters and frequented auctions and estate sales and, together, purchased and renovated more than twenty homes, where they enjoyed time with friends and family.

Gene is survived by his sons, David, of Orlando, FL, and Chris, of Howe, IN; grandchildren, Erik, Skyeler, and Jackson; two nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Frank; sister, Mary Ellen; and daughter-in-law, Alicia (David) Geib.

Having suffered three concussions while participating in football, Gene made an anatomical gift to the Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center/Sports Legacy Institute - to further study the long-term effects of brain injuries to athletes.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.
