Anna Mae Thomas

Anna Mae Thomas, 100, Sandusky, peacefully passed on April 5, 2011, in the Lutheran Memorial Home.

She was born on January 12, 1911 in Birmingham, AL, moved to Sandusky at an early age and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1929. Anna continued her education at Wilberforce University, Hampton Institute, and received her BS degree from Bowling Green State University. She was the first African-American to enter and graduate from BGSU. Anna had many interests that followed through her adult years. She loved her church and participated in numerous activities as long as her health allowed. Church choirs, usher boards, missionary, stewardess, and guild member were some of her activities. Throughout her life, Anna's love of singing was shared through church choirs, school choirs, and the Black Opera Company. She also spent time reading and volunteering with the Red Cross for over 50 years, along with various community outreach organizations. Anna is survived by her niece and nephew, Pat and Leroy Sizemore, Sandusky; four great-nieces and nephews; great- great- nieces and nephews; great-great-great- nieces and nephews; special cousin, Thomas Matthew (Rebecca) Whittico, East Lyme, CT; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna (Dorse) Thomas; and a brother, Joseph W. Thomas.

Friends may call on Sunday, April 10, 2011, from 5-8 P.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Order of Eastern Star will hold services at 6 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may also call from 10 A.M. until time of funeral services at 1 P.M. Monday, in Second Baptist Church, 315 Decatur St., Sandusky. Pastor Reginald Taylor will officiate, with Minister Bobby Langdon delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Anna Mae Thomas Scholarship Fund of Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH.
