William C. Meese, age 71, of Norwalk, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 25, while sailing with his wife, Betty off the Lake Erie Islands. The couple had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Bill was born on November 25, 1943 in Berlin Heights, the middle of five children.
He attended Berlin Heights Schools and graduated in 1961. Bill lived his entire life in Berlin Heights and Norwalk, including 45 years at the house he built that was visited by so many of his or his children's friends from Norwalk. He worked as a police officer for 14 years with the Norwalk City Police Department, 10 years for Ohio Edison, as well as both owning a business and being a sales representative in the HVAC industry. Bill served as a board member for Northern Ohio Rural Water, Family Initiative of Huron County and previously for the Huron County Airport.
Bill enjoyed family, especially his grandchildren, and traveled frequently with Betty in their retirement years. He was known among his wide circle of friends as a merry joker and prankster. He was an avid sailor, golfer, birder, conservationist, and aviation enthusiast. He enjoyed being outdoors and finding a quiet spot to read a book.
Bill is survived by his wife Betty (Heydinger) Meese; children William R. (Colleen) Meese of Connecticut, Julia (Timothy) Bush of Nevada and Paula (Michael) Hicks of Oregon; grandchildren Morgan, W. Joseph and Kathryn Meese, Korina and Elise Bush, Alyssa and Isabel Hicks; sisters Sandy (Brian) Smith (California), Karen (John) Warner (Oklahoma), and Barbara Kurzen (Attica, OH); brothers and sisters-in-law Mike Heydinger (Sandusky, OH), Mary Werner (Nebraska), Richard (Sandy) Heydinger (Kansas), Andrew (Beverly) Heydinger (Michigan), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by parents William D. and Blanche Meese, sister Mary Lou (Richard) Franklin (Collins, OH), Betty's parents Frank and Alice Heydinger, brother-in-law Lauren "Joe" Heydinger, sister-in-law Delores Heydinger, and several nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk. A funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main Street, Norwalk. The Rev. Frank Kehres will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers or arrangements, friends may consider making a memorial contribution in Bill's name to the family, for a conservation project, or to Norwalk Public Library.
