Michael Shane "Big Byrd" Byrd

Michael Shane "Big Byrd" Byrd, 59, residing in Sandusky, passed away early Saturday morning, August 29, 2015 at the Cleveland Clinic after a lengthy illness.

Mike was born on June 5, 1956 in Bluefield, WV to Norma C. (Crockett) Byrd of Sarasota, FL and the late E. Gordon Byrd.

Mike grew up in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from Northland High School in 1974. He received his Bachelor's degree in Communications from The Ohio State University. Mike was a hardworking man enjoying 42 years at Norfolk Southern Rail Road as transportation clerk. He was a friend of Bill W. Mike was an incredibly happy person and always had a positive outlook on life. Whether you knew him as Mike, Big Byrd, Byrdman, Mikey, Hop Daddy or Pookie, he was a friend to all. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially gardening at home or fishing on the waters of Lake Erie. In his spare time he was a brew master and an avid OSU Buckeyes fan. Being the big kid at heart that he was, he loved going to Cedar Point and Soak City.

In addition to his mother, Mike is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dolly (Hottenroth) Byrd, whom he married on March 17, 1995 after spending 15 years together; his sister, Terri (Ken) Ringold of Hilliard, OH; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and lots of friends.

Friends may call on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 from 4:00 pm until a Celebration of Life at 7:30 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky.
