Leroy August Wenger

Leroy August Wenger, age 92, of Flowery Branch, GA, and formerly of Sandusky, OH, passed away early evening, September 26, 2015 following a brief illness.

Leroy was born October 31, 1922 in Port Clinton, OH.

He was a 1940 graduate of Port Clinton High School and attended Sandusky Business College and numerous courses at Ohio State University. He served in the Coast Guard in WWII and had basic training in Baltimore Maryland. He was then attached to the Captain of the port at Norfolk VA.

Leroy married Kathleen Bunch of Hobbsville, NC on October 26, 1946.

Leroy is survived by 2 children; Stephen Wenger of Sandusky, OH and Karen Watts of Flowery Branch, GA, plus several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen, his parents George Wenger and Clara Weisler Wenger and his only brother Donald Wenger.

Leroy was the Executive VP of the former Lake Erie Canning Company of Sandusky, OH. He was the past President of the Sandusky Kiwanis Club and the Ohio Food Processors Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Kraut Packers Association, the National Red Cherry Institute, the Erie County Visitors Bureau and the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association. Leroy was the past President of the Sandusky, OH Charter Boat Association of which he helped start. He was also a member of the United States Charter Boat Association representing Ohio at their national meetings. Leroy was the past Commander of the Sandusky Power Squadron and was the former Chaplain of the Sandusky Yacht Club and Sandusky Power Squadron for many years.

Leroy served on the Public Relations Committee of the Sandusky, OH Power Squadron District 29. He was a contributing writer for the "Ensign" magazine and other boating publications promoting boating safety and related subjects locally and nationally. His boat, the "Saucy Tomato", was well known around Lake Erie ports. His hobbies were boating, fishing, hunting, model railroading and golf. "Captain Lee" used to give the fishing report on WLEC radio years ago.

Leroy was a former sales representative for the Oaks and Burger Company in Youngstown, OH. After retirement, Lee became the president of Wenger Enterprises where he was a charter captain and marine boat surveyor accredited by SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors). Lee was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky, OH for decades where he was an elder and usher.

Leroy and his wife then became a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Oakwood, GA after they moved to warmer weather in Georgia to live with their daughter and son-in-law in 2006. After several years of living on Lake Lanier, the family moved to a home in Flowery Branch, GA. Leroy moved to the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville, GA in 2014 where he resided until his death.

Friends may call Thursday, October 1, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Friday, October 2, 2015 at 10:00 am. The Pastor Ralph Schibler will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Port Clinton.
