August  F. Miller

 

August  F. Miller, age 87, of Castalia, died Thursday morning in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky.
He was born January 18, 1924, in Sandusky, and was a 1942 graduate of Margaretta High School. He was a life long area farmer, and won the 1988 national corn growers contest. He and his brothers Quentin and John, were  declared the 1949 State Champion Tomato Growers, and received the High Ten Growers Award from Northern Ohio Sugar Co., Fremont in 1959. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sandusky, where he served on church council and played dartball for many years. He served on the Castalia Elevator Board and was a member of the Margaretta Zoning Board of Appeals. He and his wife Arlene were 4-H Club advisors for over 40 years, and in 2002 received the Meritorious Service Award. He was also a member of the Young Christian Farmers.
Augie is survived by one daughter Judy (Tom) Driscoll of Castalia; one son Tom (Debbi) Miller of Castalia; 4 grandchildren Charlie and Claire Miller, and Brian and Meredith (Dan Dietrich) Driscoll; two sisters Dora Myers of Castalia and Joan Deering of Greenwich; one brother John (Shirley) Miller of Castalia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Arlene Lundgard in 2004; his parents Carl F. and Amelia (Schoewe) Miller; one sister Esther Behnke; and 6 brothers Elmer, Lee, Carl, Paul, Calvin, and Quentin Miller.
Friends may call from 2-6 pm Sunday, May 15, in the Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, and from 9:30 am Monday, May 16, until time of services at 10:30 am in Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Bardshar Rd., Sandusky. The Rev. Philip Gardner will officiate. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
