Elsie E. Schemmer

Elsie E. Schemmer, 91, residing in Sandusky, passed away Sunday evening, December 20, 2015 at Providence Care Center.

Elsie was born on March 20, 1924 in Ishpeming, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, to the late George and Lempi (Erickson) Halonen. She was raised in a Finnish-speaking home and did not speak English until starting school. She enjoyed skiing to and from school.

Elsie worked various jobs in Chicago before marrying John R. Schemmer on December 15, 1945 in Evanston, IL. They met on a blind date at Navy Pier in Chicago. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In her spare time she enjoyed dancing, camping, going on nature walks, socializing and spending time with her family and friends. Elsie loved all animals, especially cats.

Elsie is survived by her four daughters, Kathleen (Eric) Jensen of Toledo, Virginia (Travis) Chapin of Bowling Green, Cynthia (Tom) Glass and Theresa Woodburn both of Sandusky; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, Elsie is preceded in death by her husband, John R. Schemmer; son, John Daniel Schemmer; great-granddaughter, Chelsea Rae Fultz; two brothers, George and Andrew Halonen; and her son-in-law, Eric Jensen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held December 23, 2015 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave. Sandusky with Father Joe Steinbauer presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
