Gloria I. Holzhauser

Gloria I Holzhauser, 92, residing at the Commons of Providence, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015.

She was born in Holgate, Ohio on March 8, 1923.

At an early age her family moved to Billings Road, Bellevue, Ohio. She was a graduate of Bellevue High School in 1941 and also Sandusky Business College. Gloria, affectionately referred to as "Grandma Ho", was active in many community organizations. She was a charter member of the Better Mother's Club and Mother's Federation which were organizations instrumental in establishing kindergarten classes in the Sandusky School System in 1949-1950. Gloria was a Charter and Life Member of Sandusky AMVETS Post 17 Auxiliary, serving as president, Chaplain and various other offices as needed. She volunteered at the Ohio Veteran's Home for their monthly bingo games as well as assisting with monthly birthday parties with the Sandusky Elks for the Alzheimer Unit. Gloria assisted her husband, John, as a volunteer with the AMVETS Little League program for over 25 years. Gloria was a Life Member of Sandusky Veterans of Foreign War Post 2529. She was active with Zion Lutheran Church serving on the quilting group and as a Thanksgiving Day volunteer for the dinners coordinated between Zion and Holy Angel's churches. She was a member of the Singara Grotto Caldron #608, Sandusky and was a charter member of the Singara Grotto/Knights of Columbus/Shriner's, Firelands College Scholarship Committee which raised thousands of dollars for scholarship students at the Firelands Campus of Bowling Green State University. For many years, Gloria volunteered at the Sandusky State Theater and was named State Theater volunteer of the year. She was a recipient of the Sandusky Women of Excellence for the Sandusky area. Grandma Ho worked at American Crayon Company, the American Red Cross and retired from Industrial Nut after 22 years.

Gloria is survived by her son, Glenn (Mickey) Holzhauser of Sandusky; daughter, Sandra (Steve) Deering of Bellevue; six grandchildren, John (Jennifer) Holzhauser of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Amanda (Chuck) Barlage of Oregon, Ohio, Shawn (Loi) Dolan of Charleston, South Carolina, Erin Dolan of Sandusky, Jason Deering of Monroeville and Troy (Heather) Deering of Sandusky; one sister, Vivian Vickery of Sandusky; six great-grandchildren, Nathan and Maggie Holzhauser of Fort Wayne, Morgan and Chase Barlage of Oregon and Tyler and Lily Deering of Sandusky; numerous nieces and nephews.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1970; one daughter, Susan Dolan in 2009; son-in-law, Pat Dolan in 2010; her parents, Leslie and Lela (Ritzman) Cunningham; one brother, Leslie (June) Cunningham and one sister, Ruby Grubb.

Friends may call Monday, January 4, 2016 from 8:30 AM until time of services at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Immediately following the service a luncheon will be served at the Sandusky Elks Club, 120 E. Adams St, Sandusky. Interment will be at Sand Hill Cemetery on Mason Road, Tuesday, January 5, 2015 at 10 AM.
