Edward Lewis Feick

Edward Lewis Feick, 95, residing in Sandusky, passed away Thursday evening, March 24, 2016 at Providence Care Center after a brief illness.

Edward was born on October 2, 1920 in Sandusky, OH to the late John Charles "Charlie" and Mylitta (Taubert) Feick.

He was a 1938 graduate of Sandusky High School, attended Rice University and graduated from Ohio State University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the College of Engineering. At Ohio State he served in the ROTC, earning the Ohio DAR medal in recognition of outstanding work in military courses. Being medically excluded from active service in the US Army, he was commissioned in 1943 as a second lieutenant in Company "E", Ohio 5th infantry at Camp Perry where he served until August 1946.

Edward loved his family time, was honored to serve his community, and relished flying to Put-In-Bay to spend his summer weekends at his cottage.

Edward was a registered as a Professional Architectural Engineer and Surveyor. As an engineer and builder he followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather. The family building firm was established in 1852. After retiring from the family business he became the Erie County Engineer for twelve years. Following retirement from the county, Edward was elected to the Sandusky City Commission, where he served for two colorful terms. He was appointed to the Erie County Housing Authority Board of Directors and served for 14 years. In 1996, he was appointed Kelleys Island Engineer, a position he held over 10 years. He also taught the Carpenter Apprenticeship Program for the Carpenters Union at the Sandusky Public schools for 8 years. Edward was also an accomplished locksmith, a skill he and his brother, Tom, learned from their father during the Depression.

Edward was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and trustee. He was a member of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers and the Erie County Chapter of O.S.P.E., serving as past president and director. He was the recipient of the first Erie County "Distinguished Engineer Award' given in 1980. Edward was a member of the City of Sandusky Building Code Committee that drafted the original city code and two-family dwelling house code. In 1962 he was a founding member of the Erie County Home Builder's Association, serving as past president, director and winner of the 2000 "Outstanding Service Award." He was a licensed pilot for more than 65 years, owning his own airplane, and a member of the Airport Owners & Pilots Association.

Edward was also a member of the Sandusky Power Squadron, J.N., the Sandusky Yacht Club, Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, Sandusky Elks Association, BPO Elks Lodge #285, the Perseverance Lodge F&AM, Grotto, Amvets, Kiwanis, serving as past president and director and Hixon Fellow, the Erie County Historical Society, Ohio State Historical Society, Old House Guild, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, Friends of Stone Lab, Rice University Alumni Association, Ohio State University Alumni Association, Erie County OSU Alumni Association, receiving "Outstanding Alumnus Award" in 2001, Sandusky High School Alumni Association, director of the Erie County Senior Center, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce "Boss of the Year." He was a member of the Ohio Republican Party.

Edward is survived by his daughters, Mary (Joe) Baughman, Elizabeth "Betsy" Wilber and Barbara Gregory; sons, Edward Jr., John (Jean) and Carl (Bridget) Feick; thirteen grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Edward is preceded in death by his wife, Anita (Gundlach) Feick in 2004, whom he married January 2, 1943; daughter in infancy, Ellen Jean Feick; sister, Mary Kathryn Feick and brothers, John Charles Jr. and Thomas William Feick.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 265 Jackson St., Sandusky with Rev. Robert Bottoms officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Oakland Cemetery. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
