Eugene J. Dahs

Eugene J. Dahs, 83, of Monroeville, passed away after a brief illness on Thursday evening, June 16, 2016 in Stein Hospice Care Center.

He was born in Lorain, Ohio in 1932, and was the first of four children.

He was a 1950 graduate of Sandusky High School where he was known as "The Man with the Hoe." In 1955 he married Donna (White) of Fremont, and built their home and farm in Oxford Township. He was a lifelong farmer.

He was a member of St. John's UCC Church in Milan, serving on its council in his younger years as well as doing special projects for the church. He was a longtime member of many agriculture organizations and was respected in the local farming community. At times he could be a formidable opponent if an issue was important to him! He was an active member of Heritage Society of Erie County (HSEC). He helped with HSEC's restoration of a rare tractor called the "The Sandusky Tractor," enjoyed demonstrating his portable sawmill, and helped with HSEC exhibits at the Erie County fairgrounds.

In addition to his farming, he had a wide variety of skills and interests, including carpentry, playing baseball in his earlier years, running his sawmill, and talking. Collecting and tinkering with his various treasures was a hobby he dearly loved and wouldn't part with. He was often heard saying "I might need that someday!"

Eugene is survived by his children, John (Judy) Dahs, of Milan, Martha (Steve) Kaszar, of Cassopolis, Mich., Susan Sherer (Kirk Miller), of Akron, Richard (Denise) Dahs, of Norwalk, and Robert (Carol) Dahs of Monroeville; grandchildren, Joseph (Jodie) Dahs, of Millersport, Michael Dahs, of New London, Andrew (Holly) Sherer, of Dayton, Christopher Dahs, of Akron, Shannon (Justin) Damron, of Norwalk, Shawn Neel, of Norwalk, and Kevin and Matthew Dahs, of Milan; great-grandsons, Caleb Dahs, Damien, Gryphon and Couper Damron; sisters, Virginia (Tom) Bertsch, of Sandusky, Esther (Ronald) Omaits, of Chardon; brother, Fred Dahs, of Monroeville, and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Donna (White); his parents, Fred Herman and Blanche Mary (Tymkewicz) Dahs; and other loved ones.

Per Eugene's request, there will be no visitation. A private, family graveside service will be held in St. John's UCC Cemetery, Milan, with Rev. Wendy Schindler-Chasney officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Society of Erie County P.O. Box 2436, Sandusky, OH 44871, or to one's favorite charity.
