Robert W. Barrett

Robert W. Barrett, 89, of Sandusky, died Friday evening, July 15, 2016, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.

He was born on August 28, 1926 in Sandusky.

Robert served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Theater, with the rank of Machinist Mate 2nd Class, on the destroyer U.S.S. Compton. He was anchored in Tokyo bay, battle station alert, while the Peace Treaty was being signed.

He was employed by Esmund Dairy for 24 years and retired from the former New Departure Hyatt in 1989 after 22 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Eucharistic Devotion (Perpetual Adoration Committee), volunteered for Back to the Wild, member of the Union Local #913, loved square dancing, camping and was the ultimate handyman, fixing everything the family needed help with.

He is survived by his son, Colonel Ronald R. (Rose) Barrett USAF (Ret.), Niceville, FL; daughters, Mona Rae (William) Rutger, Castalia, Sandra (Richard) Lauber, Westlake, OH, and Laura (Kevin Bache) Barrett-Bache, Sandusky; grandchildren, Cassandra Dennis, Elisa Hodapp, Aaron Barrett, Robert Barrett, Julianne Spiers, William Z. Rutger, Lauren Lauber, and Alexis Lauber; step-grandchildren, Ashlea Gray and Erin Bache; fourteen great-grandchildren; niece, Naomi Hazelwood; and nephews, Stan Barrett and Terry Barrett.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ramona (Otto) Barrett in 2010; parents, Wilson and Emily (Reese) Barrett; brother, Clayton Barrett; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call on Saturday July 23, 2016, from 9 A.M. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, with the American Legion Post 83 Color Guard providing the military honors.
