Eugene Edmond Wittmer, 69, of Manistee, Mich., died on Thursday, December 15, 2016, with his family by his side, in Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich.

He was born on January 11, 1947 in Sandusky, Ohio to Lois Ann Bailey and Clinton Wittmer.

As a child he enjoyed spending time with his grandparents, Beatrice and William Brecht. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was at his best when wading the clear rivers and streams of Northern Mich. in pursuit of salmon and trout, hunkered in his deer blinds, or walking fields with Milo, kicking up pheasant. His greatest joy came from sharing his love of the outdoors with friends and family.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1973. His career as a firefighter began in 1973 with Perkins Township and continued with both Perkins Township and the City of Sandusky for the next 20 years. He and his wife, Sheila, relocated to Manistee, Mich. where he started a second career as a surgical assistant, working for the next eight years at the University of Wisconsin Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich. and at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2010 he spent two weeks volunteering in Haiti, as part of a surgical team, following the earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Sheila Marie (Roesch) Wittmer; mother, Lois Ann Bailey; children, Kimberly Abbey (Todd) and Jason Wittmer (Melissa); grandchildren, Iyla, Cohen, Bella, and Utah; brothers, John (Teresa) Wittmer and Robert Wittmer; mother-in-law, Martha Roesch; brothers-in-law, Daniel Roesch and Ronald (Joyce) Roesch; sister-in-law, Lori (Bob) Wagner; dear friend and colleague, Michael Yost; and faithful companion, Milo Wittmer.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Deborah Edwards; father, Clinton Wittmer; step-father, Kenneth Bailey; and father-in-law, Charles Roesch.
He will be deeply missed.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 22 until time of memorial services at 1 p.m. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.

A light banquet will follow in the Toft Event Room.
