Lynne Nota (Grathwol) Stedman

Lynne Nota (Grathwol) Stedman, 75, a native of Sandusky, died of a stroke on Jan. 23, 2017 at Manor Care Health Services in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Lynne was born April 25, 1941 in Sandusky, OH to the late Albert and Ruth (Howell) Grathwol.

After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1959, she went on to earn her bachelor's degree in Spanish from the University of Michigan (1963), and a master's degree in education from Indiana University (1965). In 1992, she received her Doctor of Philosophy in Education from The Claremont Graduate School. She was a guidance counselor at Perkins High School in Sandusky for three years before relocating to California. There, she worked for 32 years for the Rancho Santiago Community College District in Santa Ana, before retiring as Dean of Counseling in 2006.

Coupled with her lifetime love of learning, Lynne spent countless hours researching her own family's history, and was a member, with her husband, of the Palm Springs Genealogical Society. She was an avid reader, and took great pleasure in sharing her love of books with her grandchildren, through weekly trips to the library. She also crafted, and was renewing her interests in sewing and quilting. She and her husband were frequent travelers and spent their most recent vacations in India and China. From 2006 to 2008, they lived in Romania, teaching English to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Lynne was a generous, devoted grandma, who at one point moved locally to help care for her three youngest grandchildren. Wanting to get back into the classroom to work with kids of all ages, she had recently started substitute teaching for the Coachella Valley School District. In the days preceding her sudden death, she and her husband also served as volunteers at the 2017 Palm Springs Film Festival.

Lynne is survived by her husband, David Stedman; son, Luke (Alissa) Stedman; four grandchildren, Henry, Alexandra, Jack, and Violet; brother, Albert (Sandra) Grathwol; niece, Julia Grathwol, and nephew, James Grathwol.

Friends may call on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky with Pastor John Adams of New Life Church presiding. Private family burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute to Lynne's memory may do so to one's favorite charity.
