Donald J. Huntley, Sr.

Donald J. Huntley, Sr., 83, of Sandusky, passed away late Friday night, April 8, 2017 after a brief illness at Firelands Regional Medical Center.

Don was born on March 18, 1934 in Sandusky, Ohio to the late Hiram and Edith (Bechtel) Huntley.

Don graduated from Sandusky High School in 1952 and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity while attending Ohio University. He went into the Army on February 15th, 1954 and served in many capacities including; D, "Baker" Battery, 266 Armed Field Artillery Batallion, 18th Airborne Corps Field Artillery and a supply sergeant. On his return from the Army in 1956, he took over the Huntley Cleaners and later founded Huntley Uniform Rental & Sales. He was very passionate about serving his community without accepting recognition for his actions. Don handled the cleaning for the Coats for Kids Drive and the band uniforms for St. Mary's, Perkins, and Sandusky High Schools. He was a member of the Sandusky American Legion Post #83. Don was also the commander of the Sandusky Power Squadron in 1969, Commodore of the Sandusky Yacht Club in 1974, and Chairman of the First Fireboat (Sandusky) Committee, also in 1974.

Don is survived by his daughter, Ellen (Dennis) Hoffman of Powell, OH; son, Donnie (Missie) Huntley of Huron; grandchildren, Hank and Will Hoffman and D.J. and Ashley Huntley; nephews, Bruce (Susan) Beatty and Craig Huntley (Sue) Stahl; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Ellen (Beatty) Huntley, whom he married on October 22, 1960 in St. Michael's Church of Kelley's Island; sisters, Janice Stahl and Ida Mae Bickley; and brother, James Huntley.

A celebration of Don's life will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Avenue, Sandusky. A mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 11 am at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Kelley's Island with Father Nick Cunningham presiding. Inurnment will follow at Kelley's Island Cemetery.
