Mother Joan Delores Hunter Cooper

Mother Joan Delores Hunter Cooper, 85, Sandusky, passed on from this earthly dwelling to Heavenly treasures on the early morning of July 9, 2017.

The first beautiful child of Mr. Travis A. and Beulah (Quinn) Hunter was born in Oberlin, Ohio on November 13, 1931 where she attended school.

She also attended elementary school in Galion, Ohio and Sandusky, Ohio and then attended East High School in Cleveland Ohio. In 1944, while visiting family in Sandusky, she was baptized at the Second Baptist Church. In 1949, Mother Cooper reunited with Second Baptist Church and continued in her service to the Lord and his people. Mother Cooper served in many ministries including Junior Choir as a young girl and Baptist Young People Union, which is now BTU or Baptist Training Union.

As a young lady, she served fifteen years as the Rosebud Girls' Guild Advisor and for many years she was president of the Gospel Choir and the Alberta Guild. In the latter part of life, Mother Cooper served as the president of the Matron and the Missionary Union for 20 years. On March 26, 1949, Rev. William Done married Mr. Robert H. Cooper, Sr. and Mrs. Joan D. Cooper at the East Mount Zion Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio. Shortly after, they moved to Sandusky where they made their home. Mother Cooper took pride in the fact that in the 1950's and 60's the Coopers built both of their homes on Huntington Ave., raised all of their children in their home and she resided there until the time of her illness earlier this year.

After being a stay-at-home Mom for twenty years, she accepted a position at Macy's in 1969 and was a devoted employee of 37 years until she retired. In the community, she served as an advisor for Girls Assembly, was a fifteen-year advisor of the Girl Scouts and served five years as the Grand Advisor of the State of Ohio affiliation of Prince Hall Mason. She enjoyed and was devoted to reading her Bible, knitting and traveling throughout the country.

One of her many highlights is driving cross country three times from New York to California. Mother Cooper loved and enjoyed life. In 1955 she became a member of the Amaranth Grand Chapter of Eastern Star in the State of Ohio, an affiliation of the Prince Hall Mason of Ohio; traveling through all of the chairs where in 1960, she traveled to the East to become the Worthy Matron of Lakeview Chapter Order of Eastern Star, # 65 also receiving her 50TH pin in 2005. She had remained active; being one of the two oldest members of the chapter.

Left to cherish her memories are her children: Ms. Delores R. Johnson of Sandusky, Ohio, Mr. Robert H. (Steve) Cooper, Jr., of Kona, HI, Mr. Travis L. (Devonia) Cooper and Mrs. Frances (John) Armstrong both of Sandusky, OH, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; one son-in-law, Mr. Selmar Dorsey, an auntie who is 99 years young Ms. Josephine Weatherspoon and her auntie who is 95 years young Ms. Thelma Smith, three sister-in-laws Ellen Hunter, Betty Hunter and Maureen Quercioli, special cousins Ms. Barbara Harris and Minister Doris Troop, Special Daughter Charon Miller and Great Friend of the Family Darwitt Garrett, as well as other nephews, nieces cousins and friends.
