Bernice J. Hartley

Bernice J. Hartley, 90, died unexpectedly at Firelands Regional Medical Center with family at her side on Sunday, August 21, 2011.

She was born in Sandusky, Ohio, June 29, 1921, to John and Martha (Kindt) Boden and lived in Erie County throughout most of her life. Bea married John E. Hartley on May 30, 1942, and together they raised four children. As a young woman, she worked at the former Philco Plant and Periodical Publishing Bureau, and later returned to work for Sandusky City Schools until her retirement. Bea was Secretary of the Castalia Senior Club and a member of Sandusky’s Senior Social Club and the Firelands Senior Club. She was a life member of Amvets, Post 17; a past volunteer at OVH; and a regular attendee at Grace Presbyterian, OPC where she was loved as “Grandma” by all. Bea was a vivacious woman who blessed those who knew her with a twinkle in her eye, a smile to warm the heart, a ready laugh, and an encouraging word on the darkest day.
Survivors include her children, John (Donna), David (Laura), and Ken (Joan) Hartley and Ardis (Patrick) Billey; grandchildren John Adam (Wendy), Brian (Lindsay), Stephen, J. Benjamin (Leslie), and Madison Hartley, Katie (Jonathan) Roodvoets, and Natalie Krill; great-grandchildren Angelina Hartley and Noah Roodvoets; two sisters, Pearl Sabo and Shirley Young; many nieces and nephews; and her good friend Marie Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband John E. Hartley, her parents, three sisters, and one brother.
Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington Street, Castalia . Rev. Larry Oldaker will officiate the funeral on Thursday at 11:00 with interment to follow at Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron Township.
