Roland T. Harris, Sr.

Roland T. Harris, Sr., 92, of Sandusky, passed away on Monday, March 26, 2018 in the Meadows of Osborn Park, Huron, after a brief illness.

He was born on June 3, 1925 in Sandusky to Shirley J. and Hulda (Hedlund) Harris. He attended Sandusky High School. He retired from Ford Motor Co. as a security guard after 33 years of service.

A WWII Navy veteran, Roland earned numerous medals and awards, most notable the Bronze Star for shooting down a German plane threatening the ship. He was also on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He loved to fiddle with wood, creating boats and planes. He, from scratch, created a model of the LCI 414 on which he served. He was a giver at heart. The American Red Cross had his personal number and he donated blood countless times, being personally driven to Toledo and Cleveland. As a result, he saved the lives of numerous children. Many of those children, who are now adults, have written him over the years to thank him for saving their lives. Devoted to his family, and always the life of the party, Roland will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Marjorie (Market) Harris; sons, Roland T. (Jacqueline) Harris, Jr., of Sandusky, and Craig J. (Dawn Ventry) Harris, of Orient, OH; grandchildren, Roland T. (Dana) Harris, III and Amanda (Glenn) Donnithorne; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Stanley J. Harris; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Fredrick.

A committal service will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2018 in the chapel at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. Chaplain Mel Sayler will officiate and the Marines Corp Forever Honor and Color Guard will provide military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Roland's name to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.
