Stanley E. Dearth

Stanley E. Dearth, 88, Sandusky, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018, in Firelands Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Chillicothe, OH on July 18, 1929, to the late John Franklin and Hazel Marie (Minch) Dearth, where he worked the family farm with parents and siblings, and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers until leaving for military service. His family lineage provided eligibility for Sons of the American Revolution membership.

Stan graduated from Kingston High School, and Ohio University, Athens, and also attended the University of Toledo. He was a U.S. navy veteran, serving in the Korean War, as an Air Traffic Controller on Midway Atoll and in Washington D.C. prior to leaving service. He became an amateur pilot, holding his license until his health declined. He was honored to have been selected to participate in an Honor Flight trip to D.C. to visit monuments, especially the WWII and Korean War monuments.

His work travelling with Sears to launch new stores brought him and his family to Sandusky which then became home after transitioning to a career with New Departure Hyatt GM until his retirement. Ever the entrepreneur at heart, Stan was also a licensed real estate agent with JRW/Century 21 and launched and operated a Karmelkorn Shoppe franchise with partners. He kept busy after retirement working at Cedar Point and with community organization involvement.

Stan was committed to community service and was a past member of the Perkins School Board and the Perkins Township Trustees. He was a member of American Legion Post 83 and Amvets Post 17, as well as a 60 year member of the Logan Elm Masonic Lodge, F. & A.M., Zenobia Shriners, where he helped transport children to the hospitals; something of which he was very proud. As a cancer survivor, he supported cancer research and support groups and was a Relay for Life participant as able.

He is survived by his children, Cheryl L. Moats, Cincinnati, OH, David L. Dearth, Reynoldsburg, OH, Lorna J. (Dwight) Robbins, Milan, OH, and Dennis L. (Lisa) Dearth, Toledo, OH; grandchildren, Jennifer, Justin (Rhonda), Meghan (Jody), Melanie, Kayla, Hannah, Jacob, and Ethan; great-grandchildren, Mekay, Liam, Hollis, Autumn, Dawson, and Ember; brothers, John (Maxine) Dearth Jr., Columbia, MD, and Francis Dearth, Chillicothe, OH; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Louise Dearth; parents; brother, Robert Dearth; sisters, Virginia Lutz, Mildred Lutz, and Bernadine Helton.

Friends may call on Thursday, April 12, 2018, from 5-8 P.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Perservance Lodge #329 F. & A.M. will hold services at 6:30 P.M. and the Amvets Post 17 will hold services at 7:30 P.M., Thursday in the funeral home.
