Marie T. Hohler

Marie T. Hohler, 99, a long term resident of rural Norwalk, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018 just 4 days short of her 100th birthday.

Marie was born on April 26, 2018 in Berea, OH to the late Florian T. and Susan C. (Matuszak) Shafts.

Marie moved with her family to a farm near Vermilion when she was in 8th grade and was a 1935 graduate of Birmingham High School. In 1940, she married Clifford F. Hohler, and they became proud parents of three sons.

When her husband was disabled while serving World War II, Marie showed the grit and determination that she continued to demonstrate for the rest of her life. She supported her family working as a waitress, an attendant at a home for disabled children, and finally as a wallpaper hanger. For the last 20 years of her working life, she was employed at Hill's Interiors in Norwalk. Marie was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church for 75 years. Retiring at 72, Mrs. Hohler became an inveterate traveler, visiting Europe with one of her sons, and traveling across the US with her sister-in-law. Included in her travels were her cruises with her Navy Veteran brother through the Panama Canal, around the Hawaiian Islands, and later, to Alaska.

Marie was an animal lover who happily took in stray dogs. For many years her favorite cat, Mike, grew fat while lounging on the back of the couch. In retirement, she cultivated a lifelong interest in gardening, and surrounded her house with flowers.

She was an amazingly positive person and found the silver lining in every dark cloud.

Marie is survived by her three sons, David (Diane) Hohler of Norwalk, Larry (Yvette) Hohler of Long Island and Dale (Ellen) Hohler of Huron; grandchildren, Erin Marie, Jeff, Steven, Nicole Marie, Moll Marie and Josh Hohler; great-grandchildren, Courtney, Corey and Craig; two great-great grandchildren, Jaylynn and Coltin; nieces, Cindy Warren of Cottonwood, CA and Penny Dumas of Boulder, CO and several other relatives.

In addition to her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Cliff in 1981; sister, Florence Walters, and brothers, Harry and Larry Shafts.

Friends may call on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 from 4pm to 7pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory Milan Chapel, 1 S. Main St., Milan. Prayers will be recited in the funeral home at 10am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery, Norwalk.

Those wishing to contribute to Marie's memory may do so to St. Paul's Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk, OH 44857 or to Hope Children's Fund Ltd., P.O. Box 387, Setauket, NY 11733.
