Donald H. Barth

Donald H. Barth, 88, residing in Sandusky, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Ohio Veteran's Home after a lengthy illness.

Donald was born on August 25, 1930 in Sandusky, OH to the late Robert and Dorothy (Frey) Barth.

Donald graduated from Sandusky High School where he was known as the basketball's team "sophomore sensation". After high school, he chose to proudly serve his country and was a 4 year Veteran of the US Navy, serving on the USS Leyte Aircraft Carrier during the Korean War. Donald was employed at the former Voltz Furnace, and retired from Gundlach Sheet Metal. He was a skilled tradesman and he built the family home on the shores of Lake Erie where he was able to pursue his favorite pastimes of hunting, fishing and trapping with his three girls. Over the years, Donald built lasting friendships with his neighbors and was the "go to guy" for help when it came to home projects and high water levels along the lake and bay. Donald was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Sandusky Elks, Ducks Unlimited and the VFW.

Donald is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley (Voltz) Barth. He is also survived by his three daughters, Linda (Richard J.) Hohler, Commander Sherry McClure and Juli (Jack) Schlessman and grandchildren, Richard A. Hohler and Tiffany McClure and 4 step granddaughters and their families.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff on 3 South at the Ohio Veterans Home for the special care they always provided to our Dad and husband over the past years. Their experience and support provided comfort and peace to Donald and his family.

Private family services will be held. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

Those wishing to contribute to Donald's memory may do so to the Ohio Veterans Home 3 South Memory Unit, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870 or Cure Alzheimer Fund /curealz.org .
