William J. "Bill" Shover

William J. "Bill" Shover, 87, Berlin Heights and most recently the Ohio Veterans Home, passed away Tuesday evening August 27, 2019, in Stein Hospice Care Center after a brief illness.

Bill was born July 5, 1932 in Jackson, Ohio.

He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran serving as a medic and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Berlin Heights, and also a member of the American Legion. He was actively involved in the Berlin Heights Basket Festival, and he enjoyed sports, especially the Cleveland Indians.

He was employed as a truck driver for Motor Express for over 30 years.

Upon returning from Korea, Bill met Judy Ortner and the two were married on July 30, 1955. They moved to Berlin Heights in 1960 where they raised their three children, Mike (Dawn) Shover of Milan, Kathy (Mike) Old of Berlin Heights, and Chip (Olga) Shover of Berlin Heights.

In addition to his children, Bill is survived by honorary daughter Teresa Lane, of Berlin Heights, brothers, John "Bud" Shover, Huron; Ron Shover, Port Richey, Florida; and sister Margaret Haynes of Jackson, Ohio. Bill is also survived by nine grandchildren, Christie, Matt, Carrie, Tyler, Caylie, Carlie, Eli, Lily, and Stella, and seven great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy in 2013, parents, John and Grace (Gray) Shover, three brothers David, Bob and Paul and a sister, Jean Fitzpatrick.

Friends may call on Monday, September 2, 2019, from 4-7 P.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Friends may also call on Tuesday from 10 A.M. until time of funeral services at 11 A.M. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 5 E. Main St. Berlin Heights. Rev. Casey Cain and Chaplain Mel Sayler will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Berlin Heights, where military honors will be held.
