Richard Paul "Skip" Gast

Richard Paul “Skip” Gast, 86, Sandusky, died on Sunday, November 20, 2011, in Stein Hospice Care Center.

 

He was born on May 8, 1925, in Sandusky.

 

Skip served his country during WWII with the 43rd Infantry Division, in the Asiatic Pacific, as a heavy machine gunner. His battles and campaigns included  New Guinea and Luzon-Philippine. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Ribbon with one distinguished Unit Badge, and the World War II Victory Medal.

 

He was self-employed as a floor covering contractor for over 46 years, retiring in 1992.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Linda A. Beckner, Toledo, OH; grandson, Howard W. (Jennifer) Brown; great-grandchildren, Hayden Daniel, Mason Jack, and Elise Nadine; sister, Dolores J. (Walter) Roth, Fostoria, OH; brother, Norbert L. (Donna) Gast, Sandusky; several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Gast, on December 14, 1997; parents, William John and Mildred (Bickley) Gast, baby sister, Vivian; brothers, William J. Gast and Charles F. Gast.

 

There will be no visitation.  A memorial service will be held Saturday,

December 10, 2011, at 11 A.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.  Melvin M. Sayler, chaplain of Stein Hospice, will officiate.  Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.  The American Legion Post 83 Honor Guard will provide the military tribute. Memorial contributions made in Richard’s name, may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 740 Commerce Dr., Suite B, Perrysburg, OH 43551, or Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
