While at BGSU, Susan was inducted into the Phi Kappa Delta fraternity for education professionals.

Following graduation, she taught second grade in the Sandusky City Schools for thirty-two years, retiring in 2005. Susan was a member of the Sandusky Education Association throughout her teaching career.

Susan was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sandusky. She was active in various church functions including teaching Sunday School, Catechism Classes, Vacation Bible School, playing piano, and spent many years in the Zion Lutheran Senior Choir. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a Past President of the Sandusky High School Band Parents Organization.

Her hobbies included singing, playing piano, music and concert-going, word searches, reading, traveling, shopping, visiting museums and art galleries, delivering "Grandma's famous" cut-out Christmas cookies to family and friends, and trips to Cedar Point and Sea World.
