Paul Albert McIntosh, Sr.

Paul Albert McIntosh, Sr. 89, Sandusky, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 2, 2020.

Paul was born to the union of William and Dessie Park McIntosh on November 25, 1930 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

He was raised in South Carolina as one of twelve children. He worked on the farm as a child raising crops, picking cotton and survived Jim Crow and virulent, pervasive racism in the deep South.

While in South Carolina, he met a pretty little woman named Eleanor Grier whom he married in South Carolina.
Desiring better things for his young family, he left South Carolina in the mid-1950s following his brother, Lawyer McIntosh, who went up North and landed a job in Sandusky, Ohio. Mr. McIntosh soon found work at Farrell-Cheek where he worked as a molder and inspector. After much struggle and being denied a bank loan in a time when African Americans found it difficult to obtain financing for home construction, Paul persevered and was able to circumvent the racial discrimination and built a very nice home for his family. He also worked at Bechtel-Corporation as a second job. Mr. McIntosh retired from Farrell-Cheek after over 25 years of dedicated service.

Mr. McIntosh was a faithful member of St. Stephen's AME Church where he served as a trustee and deacon for many, many years.

Loving his family is what Mr. McIntosh did best. He always made sure his children were provided for. He never left the side of his wife of over 60 years during her illness and missed her dearly after her passing.

Until December of 2019, Mr. McIntosh still lived alone in the homestead and cared for himself. After evidence of his declining health became clear, he went for rehabilitation services to Providence Care Center where he passed away peacefully on June 2, 2020.

Mr. McIntosh enjoyed life. He kept a very positive attitude and was a pleasure to know by everyone he encountered. He loved to read and watch the evening news. As children, we had to be very quiet when Walter Cronkite was on. He also loved gardening and taking care of his large property and shrubbery up until last summer. He always said he wanted to go home. Our gracious heavenly Father granted his heart's desire.

He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory, daughter, Donna (Robert) Sherman, son, Delbert McIntosh, sister, Willie Sue Bell, granddaughters, Ronna (Deion) Gray, LaTorya Fiske, Jamillah Sherman, Janelle (Levar) Sherman Randle, Jalissa Sherman; great grandchildren, Malia Farrell, Deion Gray, Jr., Naomi Howard, Noelle Howard and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him dearly.

Mr. McIntosh was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dessie McIntosh ; all his siblings; beloved wife of over 60 years, Eleanor; son, Paul Jr.; and his great granddaughter, Darien Gray.

Mr. McIntosh will be celebrated by his family and close friends on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, from 10:30 A.M. until time of funeral services at 12 P.M. Noon. Covid 19 guidelines will be followed. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
