JoAnn Rosemond Eckenfels

JoAnn Rosemond Eckenfels, 61, of Sandusky, departed this life on Monday, December 26, 2011, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, OH.

She was born on July 22, 1950, in Sandusky, OH.

JoAnn graduated with her bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University and later attended graduate courses at Ashland University. She was a social studies teacher at Sandusky High School for 30 years and was also employed by the Sandusky Public Library for 18 years.

She was an extremely active citizen and community leader. She was President of her local sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha - Iota Phi Omega Chapter, Vice-President of the Black Business and Professional Women's Club, First Vice-President of the Sandusky Area Alliance of Black School Educators, a member of the National Council of Negro Women, and a member of the Democratic Women's Society.

JoAnn enjoyed traveling, especially to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. She was also an expert seamstress and enjoyed making handmade, custom articles and crafts, many of which were sold at local craft fairs.

JoAnn is survived by her loving husband, Richard A. Eckenfels, whom she married on September 28, 1985; her brother, Jim Rosemond, New Orleans, LA; sisters, Janet (James) Hymon, Hampton, VA and Julie (Ronald) Brown, Newport News, VA; mother- and father-in-law, Estelle and Christie Eckenfels, Maple Heights, OH; sister-in-law, Suzanne Eckenfels, Northfield, OH; her devoted cousin, Jennifer R. Washington, Sandusky, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juanita (Twine) Rosemond and James H. Rosemond, Sr.

Friends may call from 4-7 P.M. on Thursday, December 29, 2011 in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH. A gathering will be held afterwards for fellowship at the Sandusky Public Library from 7-9 P.M. Honoring JoAnn's wishes, there will be no funeral service. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that your expressions of love are sent to Stein Hospice in lieu of flowers.
