Ruth Marie (Slota) Chaffee

Ruth Marie (Slota) Chaffee, 93, residing in Milan, departed this life on Thursday morning, December 29, 2022 at Stein Hospice Care Center.

Ruth was born on June 8, 1929 in Cleveland, OH to the late Michael and Mary (Polivka) Slota.

Ruth graduated from St. Procop Elementary and High School in Cleveland. Ruthy met Arthur Elroy Chaffee of Milan at the age of 15. In the following summers, Ruth and Art were given a chance to see one another when her parents parked their camper along the Huron River in Milan.

On November 29, 1947, in Cleveland, at Saint Procop Church, she and Art were married. Living in the big city was not agreeable to Art. After quitting her job, having a daughter, Ruth willingly asked Art if he wanted to move to Milan, after all, she had fallen in love with the little village where Art was from. In the spring of 1949, they and their little girl of one year moved to Milan. There they purchased their first home. Another daughter and two sons later, Art was able to live his second dream of purchasing a small farm in Norwalk, on May 5, 1965, making the move Memorial Day weekend.

Art passed away on February 22, 1986 at the age of 56. Ruthy, never acquiring a driver's license, sold the farm two years later. On July, 4, 1988, Ruthy moved to a perfect home she had purchased for herself in Milan. She could walk to all the places she wanted to go and visit Art daily at the Milan Cemetery. Ruthy obtained her second job at the age of 59, at the Edison Birthplace, which was perfectly located across the street from her home. Being just too busy, she retired a little over two years later.

Ruthy loved and was loved by all her neighbors and friends.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Carol (Dennis) Conry of Norwalk; sons, Arthur A. (Jo) Chaffee of Milan and Michael "Mick" Chaffee of Norwalk; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, Ruthy is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur E. Chaffee; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth (Donald) Sebolt and brothers, Raymond and Arthur Slota.

Per Ruth's request, a private family graveside service will be held in Milan Cemetery. Pastor Ann Marshall will officiate. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory Milan Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers those wishing to contribute to Ruth's memory may do so to Stein Hospice Services, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
