Sallie Leon (Swope-Rice) McKinney

Sallie Leon (Swope-Rice) McKinney, 85, Sandusky, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 16, 2012, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.

She was born on September 13, 1926 in Columbus, Mississippi to the Reverend Johnnie and Maude (Harris) Swope.

She was married to James Elbert McKinney on Feb. 6, 1950. In the late 1950's, James and Sallie laid the first bricks down at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Sandusky, Ohio. Sallie, who was a charter member, was responsible for giving the church its name. She was a faithful member of the church and held the position of Superintendent of Sunday School, Adult Sunday School Teacher, President of the Missionary Board, and President of the Mother Board.

She worked as a nutrition administrator for The Ohio State University - Cooperative Extension Service, from where she retired. Sallie was very instrumental in starting the Care & Share of Sandusky, and was an active member of the Democratic Women, and the 4-H Club.

She held multiple cooking classes for the Sandusky community at such places as Wee-Two club, Briar Middle School, and many private homes.

Sally is the proud mother of four sons, James E. McKinney, Jr., Harrison O. (Billie Jean) McKinney, Christopher C. (Gladys) McKinney, all of Sandusky, and Howard L. (Patrice) McKinney, Elyria, OH; daughters, Johnnye Maude (Douglas) Page, Oklahoma City, OK, and Cynthia Jo Ann (American) Sanders, Sandusky, who went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 19, 2012; sisters, Ann (Tom) Bond, and Bennie Shoulders, both of Mansfield, OH, and Doris (James) White, Cincinnati, OH; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. McKinney, Sr.; her parents; stepmother, Malissia Swope; sister, Mary L. Kidd, and brother-in-law, John Shoulders.

Friends may call on Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 11 A.M. until time of funeral services at 1 P.M. in Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 224 Dixie Ave., Sandusky. Rev. Samuel Mickles will officiate. Burial will follow in Perkins Cemetery. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is assisting the family with arrangements.
