Rita C. (Meyer) McGookey, 85, of Sandusky passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012 in the Providence Care Center, Sandusky following a lengthy illness.
She was born September 17, 1926 in Sandusky, daughter of Oscar H. & Nina E. (Albert) Meyer. She was a 1944 graduate of Sandusky High School, and in 1946, she married Fenton D. McGookey of Castalia. Rita was an active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sandusky, where she sang in the senior choir for many years, taught Sunday school, was past president of the Women's Groups at Zion, and was involved in their Agape Bible Study. She volunteered at the Zion Vacation Bible School for many years. Rita also organized and spent 7 years as a Girl Scout Troop leader. She was Sandusky City Schools first teacher's aide, retiring in 1983. She loved the time spent with the SHS Class of 1944 Alumni Girls at their monthly luncheons, and playing pinochle with her retired teacher friends. Rita spent her final four years as a resident of the Providence Care Center, where the entire staff and residents became her extended family. Her family will be forever grateful for the love and care given to her.
She is survived by two daughters: Susan C. (Leonard E.) Klohn and Martha J. (Fred J.) Thompson, both of Sandusky, three grandchildren: Lucas F. Thompson of Sandusky, Kevin J. Thompson of Findlay, OH., and Daniel J. (Elizabeth M.) Klohn of Bryan, OH., which were all dear to her heart. Also one brother-in-law: William Wood, several nieces, nephews and other relatives are surviving.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Fenton D. McGookey in 2008, her parents, one brother: Woodrow Meyer, three sisters-in-law: Marian Meyer, Mariem Wood and Patricia McGookey, and other relatives and friends.
Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 PM Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky and from 10:00 AM Monday, April 2, 2012 until time of funeral at 11:00 AM in the Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. The Rev. John B. Mawhirter will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
