Shirley Ann (Kochensparger) Thom

Shirley Ann (Kochensparger) Thom, 86, of Castalia, passed away peacefully Wed., March 29, 2023 at Stein Hospice Care Center after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born on Dec. 10, 1936 in Sandusky to Clarence E. and Olivia M. (Miller) Kochensparger. She graduated from Holy Angels and St. Mary's Catholic Schools (class of 1955). She married the love of her life, Ray Alfred Thom, on Aug. 27, 1955. They were married 65 years when he passed on Oct. 19, 2020.

Shirley was a lifetime member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, where she served on the bereavement committee for many years. She was also a member of the Castalia Lions Auxiliary, where she served as President and held many other offices. She was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., a member of the American Legion, a widow member of the Sandusky ELKS, and a past-member of the AMVETS and Sandusky Yacht Club.

Shirley enjoyed the partnership with her husband at Thom Builders, Inc., where she worked as a secretary/bookkeeper. Shirley and Ray enjoyed traveling with the Ohio and National Home Builders Associations. Her hobbies included baking, reading, and enjoying the birds, squirrels, and deer that visited the yard. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Ray A. (Pam Wikel) Thom, of Castalia, and Scott T. (Candy Puma) Thom, of Sandusky; daughter, Jane A. (Randy) Mapus, of Castalia; grandchildren, Matthew (Brandy) Mapus, James (Hannah) Mapus, and Juliana (Brad) Clark; great-grandchildren, Caitlynn, Grace, Claire, Brynn, and Evan Mapus, and Lillian, Paige, Noah, and Ellie Clark; step-great-grandchildren, Kearstin (Allen) Nichols-Bosley, Todd Esposito, and Gunner Garlock; great-great-granddaughter, Shaylynn Mapus; step-great-great-grandson, Izen Nichols-Bosley; sister, Ruth (David) Witter; sister-in-law, Edna May (Gerald) LeBarre; and many other family members and friends.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Frank, Clarence, Jr., and John Kochensparger; sisters, Mary Fultz, Doris Bretz, and Olivia Schwiefert.

Friends may call on Mon., Apr. 3 from 8:30-9:30 am at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Ave., Sandusky. Burial will follow in Castalia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute to Shirley's memory may do so to Holy Angels or Stein Hospice.
