Richard L. Heidl

Richard L. Heidl, affectionly known as "Papa Mato", 79, Sandusky, passed away, Monday, April 3, 2023, in Stein Hospice Care Center.

He was born in Sandusky on August 25, 1943 to the late Richard and Jean (Oswald) Heidl Sr., and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1961. Richard was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1961 to 1970 in the Vietnam War.

He was employed by the Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 32 years retiring in 2002.

He was a member of First Christian Church, Sandusky, loved woodworking and building model airplanes.

He is survived by his children, Brenda (Raymond III) Leal, Sandusky, and Donald (Julie) Granquist, Salem, OH; grandchildren, Raymond Leal IV, Brandon J. (Katherine) Leal, Samantha A. (Jon Frierson) Leal, Zachary (Bryanna) Granquist, and Joshua S. Granquist; great-grandchildren, Abegail, Isabella, Odin, Layla, Wyett, and Piper Leal, Josiah and Marlee Frierson, Greyson and Violet Granquist; companion, Nora Ritter; sister, Nancy Reed; sisters-in-law, Anna Spadaro and Sarah Dienes; brother-in-law, Michael (Victoria) Dienes; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Heidl in 2014, parents; great-grandaughter, Hailie Leal; and sister-in-law, Rebecca Pesina.

Friends may call on Monday, April 10, 2023, from 5-8 P.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 A.M. in First Christian Church, 3410 Hayes Ave., Sandusky. Rev. Don Spurlock will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, with the American Legion Post 83 and V.F.W. Post 2529 Honor Guards providing the military tribute.
