Gilbert "Gil" C. Dehnkamp, 87, of Sandusky and residing in the Ohio Veterans Home, passed away on Sunday evening, January 27, 2013 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Gil was born on October 20, 1925 in Gary, Indiana to the late Gilbert C. and Anna (Paul) Dehnkamp. Raised in Olean, New York, he graduated from Hinsdale High School. He attended St. Bonaventure College in Olean before enlisting in the US Army.

He served with the 87th Infantry in World War II, where he was wounded, receiving the Purple Heart.
After the war, he earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
After college, Gil accepted employment at West Virginia Pulp and Paper, where he worked in various management positions in New York, Louisiana, and West Virginia, before retiring from Clupak (a subsidiary of Westvaco) in New York City in 1990.

A lifelong Lutheran, Gil was most recently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sandusky.

Gil is survived by his daughter, Lynn (Lance) Franke, of Clyde; son, Keith Dehnkamp, of Sandusky; granddaughter, Carrie (Sean) Keipert, of Sandusky; grandson, US Army Capt. Kevin (Belinda) Franke, of Denver; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruth, in 2012.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staffs of the Ohio Veterans Home and Stein Hospice for their care and comfort provided to Gil at the end of his life.

Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. until time of military services at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, February 8, 2013 at the Ohio Veterans Home, Giffin Chapel, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Interment will follow in the Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery.
