Raymond Behnke

Raymond Behnke, 90, of Sandusky, passed away on Monday morning, February 4, 2013, in the Erie County Care Facility, Huron.

He was born in Sandusky on January 31, 1923, and was a member of the Merchant Marines.

He was employed by Eastern States Farmers Exchange, and retired from the City of Sandusky, as a building inspector, in 1985.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sandusky Eagles, and life member of the V.F.W. Post 2529. He loved to needlepoint and travel with his wife, Mary. One of his many achievements was the building of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

He is survived by his daughters, Judy (Ronald) Biby, of Sandusky and Patricia (George) Paterson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; son, Thomas (Sheila) Behnke, of Sandusky; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sister, Joyce Ricci, of Huron; brother, Allen Behnke, of Michigan; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise (Jensen) Behnke, on March 9, 2012; parents, Raymond T. and Verna A. (Palmer) Behnke; daughter, Sharon, in infancy; granddaughter, Amy Behnke; and brothers, Don Behnke and Douglas Behnke.

Friends may call from 4-7 P.M. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. on Thursday, February 7, 2013 in the funeral home with Mel Sayler, Chaplain for Stein Hospice, officiating.
