Richard W. Gettell, Sr.

Richard W. Gettell, Sr., of Sandusky, died Monday afternoon, February 5, 2013 in the Admiral's Point Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Huron, following a brief illness.

He was born May 22, 1924 in Fairport Harbor, Ohio and was a 1942 graduated of Lakewood High School and a graduate of Kent State University. Richard was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of WW II. He had lived in the Sandusky area since 1954. Richard was employed at the Lorain Ford plant, retiring in 1987. Prior to this, he was a state game warden at Resthaven in Castalia. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved to read. Richard was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Sandusky, Commodore Denig Post 83, American Legion, Elks #285, National Rifle Association, Erie County Conservation League, and the Sandusky Orioles Club.

He is survived by four daughters: Donna (H. Brad) Featherston of Thousand Oaks, CA., Denise (Bill) Rudolph, Jane (Shaun) Bickley, both of Huron, Joan Coressel of Port Clinton, two sons: Richard (Linda) Gettell, Jr. and Daniel Gettell, both of Los Angeles, CA., three step-daughters: Michele (Robert) Gastier of Sandusky, Mary Jo Hart of Huron and Marla (Randall) Troike of Castalia, two step-sons: Michael J. Kish of Sandusky and Mark (Belinda) Kish of Chicago, Ill., 23 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his first wife: Lois M. (Pfizenmayer) Gettell in 1987, his second wife: Mary Ellen (Furrow) Gettell in 1998, one grandson and his parents: William & Vivian (Ritola) Gettell.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until time of Memorial Service at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 216 Pennsylvania Avenue, Sandusky. The Rev. Kathleen F. Shuck will officiate. Private committal services for the family will be held in the Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
